The Others
videoinstallation, 4 min, 2015

The music plays a big part in the movie. The music is Staten & Kapitalet by Ebba Grön mixed with Swedish Police March. In the beginning, both melodies try to dominate the other, but eventually they turn into a cacophony. Video installation The Others is a commission for The Stockholm Police Museum’s exhibition Regarding The Police.
My installation is based on documents from the squatting at Folkungagatan, Stockholm, in 1994. During this event the police used 200 task force members against ten activists who were squatting in an old house in Södermalm. In turn, the activists used bricks, among other things to hurt the police. Something they succeeded with. Both sides had prepared for battle, not for dialogue or peaceful negotiations. Both were unjustifiably violent. I have been given historical materials by The Police Museum, materials about police behaviour in extreme situations and materials about group behaviour amongst gang members. I could find many similarities between the police and the squatters.
The video won the first prize at the VIDEOGUD festival in 2014 and was shown at a number of exhibitions and festivals.
